The Danforth Hills define the high drainage divides of Northwest Colorado in this recent survey, where the border between Moffat and Rio Blanco counties follows a series of ridge lines. The landscape is characterized by a complex network of seasonal and perennial watercourses, including the central Good Spring Cr and its many tributaries like W Fork Good Spring Cr and James Cr. These streams have carved deep incisions into the terrain, forming named features such as Hole-in-the-Wall Gulch.

Transportation through this high-altitude cattle and energy country relies on primitive routes like Co RD 30 and Co RD 51. The topographical bottleneck at Ninemile Gap serves as a natural transition point between the Ninemile Draw drainage and the northern slopes. Human modification of the landscape is subtle but present, notably at Lunney Reservoir in the southeastern corner, which provides vital water storage in an otherwise arid region.
