The English Settlement and the small hamlet of Oldham anchor this portion of Douglas County, where the terrain transitions from the high peaks of Ben More Mountain down toward the Calapooya River. This 1987 provisional survey highlights an area defined by its extraction history, most notably at the Nonpareil Mine and the nearby Bonanza Mine. The presence of an Old RR Grade winding through the valley suggests the importance of early transport networks for moving timber or ore out of these hills.
