Wilson Mill and the rural settlement of Newport anchor the western reaches of this high-elevation terrain, where the headwaters of the Toccoa River flow through the Chattahoochee National Forest. This section of the Blue Ridge Mountains is defined by a series of named gaps and peaks, including the southern terminus of a major regional trail system at Springer Mtn. The landscape is characterized by its numerous small burial grounds, such as Johnson Cem and Garrett Cem, which reflect the generations of families who established homesteads in the narrow valleys of Noontootla Creek and Rock Creek.
