The Mohawk Valley dominates this arid landscape in Yuma County, serving as a vast transition between the Mohawk Mountains to the northeast and the rising peaks of the Sierra Pinta in the southwest. This area is defined by its extreme isolation and federal oversight, split between the Barry M Goldwater Air Force Range and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge.

A network of 4wd tracks provides the only passage through the valley floor, connecting various survey markers such as BM 709 and BM 678. The boundary between military and conservation land is clearly delineated, marking the transition into the Cabeza Prieta Wilderness. This 1996 update reflect a landscape largely untouched by permanent settlement, preserved instead for military testing and desert biodiversity within the Sonoran Desert.
