Novice sits at the northeastern corner of this landscape, where the street grid of W Commercial Ave and White Ave meets the open ranchland of the Texas plains. The terrain is defined by the headwaters of several drainage systems, including the serpentine path of the S Fork Jim Ned Cr and the branching fingers of N Prong Hords Cr. Water management is central to the area's layout, evidenced by the Soil Conservation Service Site 12e1 Reservoir, Novice City Lake, and smaller catchments like Coker Lake. These water sources, alongside scattered natural points like Willow Spring and Pecan Spring, supported a rural economy built on the high ground near Blue Gap. Local history is preserved at the Atoka Cem and Crews Cem, which stand as markers of early settlement patterns along the county line between Runnels and Coleman counties.
