The mountain town of Noxon serves as a northern anchor for this study of the Kaniksu National Forest along the Clark Fork. The terrain is defined by the high elevations of the Coeur d'Alene Mountains and prominent summits such as Huckleberry Mtn and Loveland Peak. This landscape is carved by a dense network of drainages including Pilgrim Creek, Marten Creek, and Stevens Creek, many of which follow the deep recesses of the Devil Gap and Hole-in-the-Wall.
