Shasta National Forest surrounds the branching waters of the Sacramento and Pit River systems, centered on the community of O'Brien. This 2022 survey details the complex shoreline of Shasta Lake, where the McCloud River Arm and Pit River Arm meet the main body of the reservoir. The topography is dominated by prominent summits such as Haycock Peak and O'Brien Mtn, with the jagged Gray Rocks rising in the south. The area’s recreational character is evident in the network of established paths, including the Bailey Cove Trl and Packers Overlook Trl. Numerous coves and inlets, such as Turntable Bay and Packers Bay, define the interface between the wooded uplands and the water, while isolated features like Beaver Island and Ski Island emerge from the lake's depths.
