About this map

The Linville Gorge Wilderness and Pisgah National Forest define the northern and western reaches of this North Carolina landscape, where the Blue Ridge foothills transition into the deep waters of Lake James. The terrain is deeply incised by drainages such as Roses Creek, Steels Creek, and Irish Creek, which flow toward the Catawba River basin. In the mid-1990s, the area maintained a rural character punctuated by numerous country churches, including Mountain Grove Church, Zion Church, and Lake James Church.
