The North Fork Umpqua River serves as the central artery for this Douglas County landscape, winding past a series of public riverfront lands and natural landmarks. The river corridor is punctuated by a network of recreation sites, including Swiftwater County Park and the Richard G Baker Memorial County Park. Further east, Smith Springs and the associated Smith Springs County Park mark a key gathering point along the water.

Away from the riverbanks, the terrain rises sharply toward prominent peaks such as Shivigny Mountain and Burnt Mountain. Smaller watercourses like Susan Creek, known for the Susan Creek Falls, and Rock Creek drain the surrounding timberlands. Industrial activity is noted by several Quarries and a Gaging Station on the river, while the point at Old Fairview looks out over the complex network of creeks that define this stretch of the Oregon Cascades.
