Fishlake National Forest encompasses much of this high-elevation landscape, where the Old Woman Plateau rises above a complex system of canyons and hollows. The eastern edge of the Sevier County highlands is defined by the Saleratus Benches and the winding course of Saleratus Cr. In the southern portion of the map, the junction of Ivie Cr and Clear Cr marks a natural corridor used by travelers and industry alike, evidenced by the proximity of Fremont Junction and Post Hollow.

Evidence of the area's resource-based history is visible in the placement of Knight Mine Rd and Convulsion Rd, which cut through the drainage basins of Meadow Cr and Coal Mine Cr. Terrain features like Emigrant Pass and Meadow Gulch Divide underscore the importance of these mountain passes for movement across the plateau toward the Gilson Valley. Numerous seasonal water sources, including Summit Spring and Mud Spring, provided essential stops for livestock and early travelers in this arid upland environment.
