Ord Mountain and the surrounding high desert peaks of the Newberry Mountains and Rodman Mountains define this section of the Mojave during the early 1980s. Mineral exploration is a visible theme throughout Tyler Valley and the adjacent ranges, highlighted by the Maumee Mine and several unnamed mines. Toward the southern end of the sheet, the flat expanse of Ericksen Dry Lake sits at the base of West Ord Mountain, illustrating the typical basin-and-range topography of San Bernardino County. The network of four-wheel-drive roads connecting Hadden Well and Wills Well indicates a landscape primarily utilized for mining, communication, and resource management rather than permanent settlement.
