The San Juan National Forest defines this high-elevation landscape along the border of La Plata and Montezuma Counties. Centered on the prominence of Orphan Butte, the terrain is marked by a complex system of drainages such as East Canyon and Rough Canyon, feeding into the northern Dolores River. Water management for the high country is evident through a series of upland catchments including Last Chance Reservoir, Point Reservoir, and Park Reservoir.
