Agricultural fields and drainage networks define this mid-Michigan landscape along the boundaries of Clinton, Shiawassee, and Gratiot counties. The village of Ovid occupies the southwestern corner, where the Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee (CIS) State Trail follows the former railroad corridor eastward through Burton. Small rural settlements like Carland and Hoovers Corners are situated among a grid of section-line roads, including N Meridian Rd and N Carland Rd. Local history is preserved at the Old Fairfield Cem and Fairfield Cem in the central township area, as well as the Maple Grove Cem near the southern boundary. The terrain is marked by low-lying wetlands and vital water management features such as David Drain and W Br Sawyer Drain, which support the intensive farming traditional to this region of the Shiawassee River watershed.
