The San Andreas Fault cuts a distinct northwest-southeast path through this landscape along the border of Kern and San Luis Obispo Counties. This geologically active corridor is defined by its arid valleys and sharp elevation changes, where the northern end of the Temblor Range meets the Shale Hills. The area is characterized by large agricultural and livestock holdings, including the La Panza Ranch and Las Yeguas Ranch, which occupy the valleys between seasonal water sources like Packwood Cr and Bitterwater Cr.
