Caballo Mountains define the physical and industrial history of this Sierra County landscape, where the high peaks of Turtle Mountain and Caballo Cone overlook a complex system of drainage and resource extraction. The interior of the range is cut by deep landmarks such as Palomas Gap Canyon and Lead Mine Canyon, the latter of which leads directly to the named Lead Mine.

Ephemeral water sources like Mescal Spring and Ash Spring are critical markers in this arid terrain, as are man-made features such as Red Tank and Little Ohney Tank. The northern edge of the sheet includes a portion of the Pedro Armendaris No 33 land grant, while the southern reaches are dominated by the winding paths of Hackberry Draw and Putman Draw. This provisional survey preserves the precise alignment of roads and resource sites during the late twentieth century.
