Much of the central terrain falls within the Lincoln National Forest, characterized by deep incisions like Crooked South Canyon and Box Canyon. A solitary Jeep Trail provides one of the few named transit routes through this complex system of draws and canyons, including Segrest Draw and the descriptively named Little Dog Canyon. The reliance on tanks and wells like Corner Well highlights the arid conditions and the necessity of developed water sources for livestock in this part of New Mexico during the early 1960s.
