1980 Map of Parthenon

About this map

The Buffalo River and Little Buffalo River carve deep through the Boston Mountains of Newton County, shaping a landscape of steep hollows and high points like Moss Mountain and Judea Mountain. The small settlement of Parthenon sits along Shop Creek, while other rural communities such as Wayton and Red Rock are connected by the winding routes of Ark 74 and Ark 16. Local history is preserved in several remote sites, including the Union Hill Cem and Lone Beach Ch, reflecting the dispersed settlement patterns of the Ozarks. Much of the southern portion of the area is protected within the Ozark National Forest. Notable landmarks such as Diamond Cave near Henson Creek and the Gum Springs overlook provide distinct points of interest within this heavily forested and dissected plateau.
