The Buffalo River and Little Buffalo River carve deep through the Boston Mountains of Newton County, shaping a landscape of steep hollows and high points like Moss Mountain and Judea Mountain. The small settlement of Parthenon sits along Shop Creek, while other rural communities such as Wayton and Red Rock are connected by the winding routes of Ark 74 and Ark 16.
