Payette National Forest dominates this Idaho County landscape, where the high-elevation terrain of the Salmon River Mountains is defined by a dense cluster of alpine lakes and prominent summits. The central peaks of Patrick Butte and Hard Butte rise above a series of glacial cirques containing Paradise Lake, Goat Lake, and the Upper Twin Lake and Lower Twin Lake system. Evidence of historic fire lookout placement is found at the Hard Butte Lookout, situated to command views over the drainage of Partridge Creek and Warm Springs Cr. To the east, the dramatic Lava Ridge and Sams Throne mark the transition toward the Hells Canyon breaks, while Box Canyon carves into the northern reaches of the quadrangle near Lake Point.
