Payette National Forest dominates this mountain landscape, which was field checked in 1963 to document the drainage systems and peaks of the Salmon River Mountains. The terrain is defined by prominent north-south features like Lava Ridge and Center Ridge, which hem in Little French Creek. To the south, the namesake Black Tip peak rises above a complex network of high-altitude basins and alpine waters.

Hydrological patterns are well-documented, showing the headwaters of the North Fork Payette River feeding into Upper Payette Lake. This area was characterized by a lack of permanent settlements, focused instead on the natural geography of Payette Meadows and numerous small lakes including Mac Han Lake and Scribner Lake. The boundary between Idaho County and Valley County is clearly delineated as it traverses the high ridges and the Fisher Creek Saddle.
