The Pilot Range defines the vertical spine of this borderland terrain, where the high desert of Tecoma Valley meets the high peaks of the Great Basin. This recent survey captures the complex topography of the Utah-Nevada state line, specifically the boundary between Elko and Box Elder counties. The landscape is marked by a network of drainage systems and high points, including Mineral Mountain and Copper Mountain in the northern reaches, transitioning into the steep walls of Regulator Canyon and Box Canyon.

A series of vital water sources are clustered along the eastern slopes of the range, including Killian Springs, Cottonwood Springs, and Parson Springs. These springs provided essential resources for early transit through the area via Patterson Pass, a primary crossing point through the mountains. Rural infrastructure is represented by primitive routes such as Church Road and Burro Road, which connect the valley floors to the high-elevation gaps of the range.
