Bear River dominates this corner of Bear Lake County, carving a wide, wetland-filled valley floor between the Preuss Range and the Sheep Creek Hills. The landscape is a complex network of agricultural water engineering, featuring numerous diversions like the Montpelier Preston Canal, Black Otter Canal, and Peg Leg Ditch. These irrigation works reflect a long-standing reliance on the river to support the valley's ranching and farming operations. Small rail-side and roadside settlements like Pegram, Harer, and Alton are distributed along the eastern edge of the river plain, connected by historic routes including Old Hwy 30 and Pegram Rd. The surrounding uplands are defined by numerous named draws and ridges, such as Dam Hollow, Tubbs Hollow, and Dairy Ridge, which give way to the larger heights of the Pine Spring Ridge to the south.
