The high peaks of the Boulder Mountains and Pioneer Mountains define this high-altitude landscape along the border of Custer Co and Blaine Co. As of 2023, the region remains a largely roadless expanse managed by the Challis National Forest and Sawtooth National Forest. Primitive access is provided by a network of backcountry routes such as the Big Fall Creek Trl and Kane Lake Trl, which lead into a terrain punctuated by dramatic summits like Phi Kappa Mtn and the distinctively named The Devils Bedstead. This topography is characterized by deep drainage basins and alpine basins holding Kane Lake, Boulder Lake, and the remote Wildhorse Lakes. The drainage pattern is complex, with Summit Creek and Phi Kappa Creek carving significant corridors through the central highlands, while Duncan Ridge and Handwerk Peak dominate the southern reaches of the quadrangle.
