Sun Valley and Ketchum occupy the center of this mountain landscape during a period of transition, where world-class recreation and historical industrial extraction meet. The expanding resort infrastructure is visible in the network of ski lifts, a Landing Strip, and the Golf Course winding through the valley, while the Union Pacific railroad corridor traces the Big Wood River through the heart of town.

Evidence of the area's silver and lead mining heritage is found further east within the Sawtooth National Forest. Concentrated activity persists near the settlement of Triumph, where the Triumph Mine and North Star Mine are shown alongside a Tailings Pond. Other workings like the Independence Mine and June Day Mine are scattered across the surrounding slopes of Proctor Mtn and Dollar Mountain, connected by primitive jeep trails and pack routes that follow drainages like Parker Gulch and Keystone Gulch.
