Carrabelle and the surrounding coastal lowlands are defined by a complex network of blackwater streams and wetlands in this 2015 study. The northern reaches are dominated by the New River, which winds through the landscape toward the confluence of the Crooked River and the Thompson Cutoff. A distinct cluster of small island features characterizes the namesake Pickett Bay, while the eastern portion of the map covers the western edge of Saint James Island.
