Cibola National Forest encompasses a large portion of this high-country landscape, where the boundary between McKinley and Cibola counties bisects the terrain. The residential community of Bluewater Acres is situated in the southeastern corner, featuring a dense network of streets with aquatic names such as Kokanee Dr and Swordfish Dr, reflecting its proximity to the waters of Bluewater Lake. To the north, the terrain transitions toward the Las Tusas Valley and the small settlement of Pine Canyon. Water management is a visible priority in this arid environment, evidenced by labels for the Tuas Mesa Stock Tank and Tusas Mesa Tank located near the elevated reaches of Tusas Mesa. Numerous forest roads and trails, including Motorized 317 and Bluewater Rd, indicate a landscape primarily used for ranching, timber, and outdoor recreation during the early 21st century.
