East Malta Colony sits at the western edge of this landscape in Phillips County, marking a pocket of settlement amid a complex network of dry washes and drainage systems. The terrain is defined by the Larb Hills to the east, where the land is carved by numerous namesake coulees including Gilbertson Coulee, Crooks Coulee, and Pennington Coulee. These features represent the characteristic erosional topography of the northern plains, where seasonal runoff has sculpted deep channels into the prairie.
