Apache Lake and the Salt River corridor anchor this portion of the Tonto National Forest along the Gila and Maricopa County border. The terrain is defined by extreme relief, where the historic Apache Trl winds through the drainage of Fish Creek Canyon and skirts the edges of the Mazatzal Mountains. This landscape is a network of springs and named canyons that reflect the importance of water management and transit in the arid Southwest.
