Apache Lake and its northern inlets, including Mazatzal Bay, anchor the western portion of this landscape within the Tonto National Forest. The topography is defined by the steep elevation changes of the Mazatzal Mountains and prominent summits such as Pinyon Mtn and the distinct Castle Dome. This 2018 survey reveals a terrain intersected by the historic Apache Trl and the modern path of the Arizona National Scenic Trail, which winds through the eastern ridges.
