The Mazatzal Mountains rise sharply above the Salt River Valley, where the waters of Apache Lake meet the steep western slopes. This high-country landscape within the Tonto National Forest is defined by complex geology and a sparse network of historic trails and springs. The legendary Apache Trl snakes through the northern elevations, while the Arizona National Scenic Trl traverses the eastern ridges of Two Bar Ridge. Interior drainage basins are marked by a succession of vital water sources such as Cedar Basin Spring, Klondike Spring, and White Rock Spring. Distinctive landmarks like Castle Dome and Fish Creek Canyon dominate the topography, connected by the Reavis Ranch Trl which follows the contours through Windy Pass and Plow Saddle.
