Flathead National Forest land defines this landscape dominated by the winding fingers of Hungry Horse Reservoir. The topography rises steeply from the water's edge, reaching a high point along the eponymous Pioneer Ridge to the west. This 2017 survey documents the complex shoreline created by the damming of the South Fork Flathead River, revealing several prominent landforms now isolated as islands, such as Clayton Island and Elk Island.
