Bitterroot National Forest defines the topography of this high-elevation region in Ravalli County, dominated by the peaks of Piquett Mtn and Quartzite Mtn. The hydrology is characterized by a series of high-altitude basins containing Shelf Lake, Piquett Lake, and Slate Lake, which feed numerous drainage systems including Piquett Creek and Drop Creek. The landscape is etched with steep ravines such as Mill Gulch, Meadow Gulch, and Kraft Gulch that descend from the primary ridgelines.
