The Placerville settlement sits at the confluence of the San Miguel River and Leopard Cr in this high-altitude San Miguel County landscape. This 2019 survey documents the complex topography of the western slope, where deep incisions like Leopard Creek Canyon and Specie Creek Canyon separate expansive tablelands such as Iron Springs Mesa and Specie Mesa. Portions of the Uncompahgre National Forest cover the northwest corner, including the distinctive formation known as The Flatiron.
