Plum Butte rises as a prominent landmark in this prairie landscape along the county line separating Hettinger and Adams counties. The terrain is defined by the drainage patterns of Timber Creek and Sheep Creek, which meander through a grid of section-line roads such as 14th Ave NE and 22nd St NE. In the northwestern corner, the depression of Dry Lake provides a distinct hydrological feature in an otherwise high-plains environment. This 2024 survey reflects the modern agricultural and ranching layout of the North Dakota countryside, where the Public Land Survey System continues to dictate the orientation of local travel and property boundaries.
