The coastal marshes of Terrebonne and St. Mary Parishes are defined by a labyrinthine network of waterways where the Atchafalaya River system meets the Gulf. Industrial activity in this wetland landscape is evidenced by the West Deer Island Oil Field and the Deer Island Oil and Gas Field, with numerous drill holes and platforms scattered across the marsh. These sites represent the intensive energy extraction efforts that transformed the Louisiana coastline in the late 20th century.

Water dominates the geography, with Plumb Bayou and Creole Bayou snaking through the sediment-rich delta. Much of the land is preserved within the Atchafalaya Delta State Wildlife Management Area, protecting the shifting terrain of Rainbow Island and Halters Island. This environment is a dynamic zone of deposition and erosion, where features like Halters Island Point mark the transition into the open waters of Atchafalaya Bay and Fourleague Bay.
