Poinsett State Park and the expansive wetlands along the Wateree River define this part of the South Carolina coastal plain. The landscape is a complex network of swampy lowlands and elevated ridges, where old water bodies like Christmas Mill Lake, Kohlers Old River, and Brushtop Lake follow the meandering path of Beech Creek. To the west, the Congaree National Park Wilderness borders the river, preserving the native floodplains that separate Richland and Sumter Counties.
