Pomeroy and its distinct Pomeroy Bend serve as the centerpiece of this study of the Ohio River corridor. The riverfront is densely developed, connecting the settlements of Middleport, Bradbury, Lincoln Heights, and Pomeroy in a continuous chain along the northern bank, while Mason, Clifton, and Hartford City line the West Virginia side. A significant regional crossing is provided by the Pomeroy-Mason Toll Bridge, linking the economies of Meigs and Mason counties.

Away from the river, the landscape transitions into a series of hollows and ridges, such as Loudermilk Hollow and Horner Hill. Numerous historic burial grounds are scattered throughout the hills, including Hiland Cem, Bunker Hill Cem, and the Odd Fellows Cem. Smaller inland communities like Rock Springs, Wolfpen, and Rutland are connected by a winding network of roads that follow the natural drainage of Leading Creek and Thomas Fork.
