About this map

Industrial expansion and agricultural development define this Central Valley landscape, surveyed in 1927. The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad runs as a central north-south spine, serving the small settlements of Pond, Petro, and Elmo. The presence of the Standard Oil Co Storage Tanks west of the tracks highlights the region's early 20th-century oil infrastructure. While much of the terrain is partitioned by a grid of local roads and property lines, the natural meandering course of Poso Creek cuts through the southern portion of the quadrangle, providing a distinct contrast to the engineered geometry of the surrounding fields and rail sidings. This study by A.B. Searle preserves the exact placement of early Kern County infrastructure before modern agricultural intensification altered the surface landscape.
