Upper Red Lake defines the southern reach of this 1970s orthophotomap, showing the shoreline as it appeared when the water reached a normal reservoir pool elevation of 1175 feet. This area is characterized by dense forest and managed wetlands, where several jurisdictions converge. The landscape is divided among the Beltrami Island State Forest, the Red Lake State Wildlife Management Area, and the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

A network of seasonal paths, marked as Winter Trail, provides the only evidence of overland transit through the marshy interior.
