About this map

The Rapid River winds through this northern landscape, which is defined by an extensive and complex network of drainage projects. Compiled by the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army in 1918, this military survey reveals the systematic effort to manage the wetlands of Beltrami County. Vast stretches of land are marked by high-density lateral and judicial ditches, such as the Main Judicial 1224 Ditch No 25 and the Jud. Ditch 34, designed to reclaim terrain labeled alternately as Timbered or Opening.
