Poverty Flat and the surrounding high desert of Coconino County are defined by a landscape of sparse water sources and immense geographic features. This 1985 provisional survey captures a remote section of the Paria Plateau, where the survival of early inhabitants and livestock depended upon vital watering holes like Sand Spring and Cottonwood Spring. The terrain is dominated by the sprawling Sand Hills and the elevated expanse of Pinnacle Ridge, illustrating the geological isolation of the region.
