The former settlement at Lucky Boy (Site) sits tucked near the Lucky Boy Mine, which anchors the northern end of the range. The landscape is a complex of steep ridges and deep drainages, including Johnston Canyon and Powell Canyon, where ephemeral water sources like Powell Spring provided essential resources for early prospectors.

Large portions of the terrain are divided between the Naval Reservation to the north and east and the Toiyabe National Forest covering the central peaks. The transition from the high summit of Powell Mtn down toward the wide expanse of Whisky Flat reveals the stark relief of the Great Basin.
