Little Missouri National Grassland dominates this portion of Slope County, where the high plains break into the complex drainages of the Badlands. The Little Missouri River carves a winding path through the center of the sheet, joined by numerous seasonal tributaries including Butte Cr, Cannonball Creek, and Horse Cr. This landscape is characterized by its prominent topographic rises, most notably Pretty Butte in the southern section and the Limber Pine Area to the north, which represents a distinct ecological pocket within the larger prairie environment.
