About this map

The boundary between Valencia and Socorro Counties bisects this arid high-desert landscape in the mid-1960s. Ranching infrastructure provides the primary evidence of human activity, centered around the Victorino Ranch and various water sources critical for livestock. The terrain is defined by steep-walled escarpments including Victorino Mesa and the prominent Tres Hermanos Mesa, which rises above the deep cuts of Cañon de la Ternera. Water management is clearly the lifeblood of this region, as seen through the distribution of the Victorino Well, No 7 Windmill, and the Victorino Spring. The presence of Laguna Del Oro and Ojo Ternera indicates the traditional reliance on rare surface water and improved tanks to support grazing in this section of New Mexico.
