About this map

Lava Flow of 1950 scarring the northwest corner of this Kau District survey illustrates the active volcanic character of the Hawaii landscape. The map captures a coastal region defined by transition, from the Pacific Ocean shoreline at Punaluu Harbor to the steep, gulch-cut slopes of the Kau Forest Reserve. Human presence is marked by former habitation areas like Middle Moaula Camp (Site) and Mountain House (Site), as well as the Ninole-Wailau Homesteads. Ancient cultural history is preserved at coastal landmarks including Kaneeleele Heiau and Kaieie Heiau. Infrastructure for the agricultural economy is evident through numerous water management features such as Old Plantation Spring, various gaging stations, and a water tunnel near Makanau. The map also details local transportation and recreation, from the Upper Paauau Landing Strip to the Golf Club and Punaluu Beach Park.
