Clark Fork winds through the northern portion of this landscape, carving a corridor for transportation and trade through the mountains of Lolo National Forest. This topography necessitated engineering feats for the regional rail network, evidenced by the Nimrod Tunnels and Beavertail Tunnel, which allowed passage through the high country. The small settlement of Ravenna serves as a central point in this transition zone between the river valley and the John Long Mountains.
