In the mid-1960s, this area of Carbon County was a site of active geological exploration, evidenced by numerous named prospects and operations such as the Old Glory Mine, Sandra Mine, and the curiously named Swamp Frog Mine. The topography is defined by dramatic vertical relief, with Red Pryor Mountain rising above unique features like the Red Pryor Ice Cave and Keyhole Cave.

Drainages like Crooked Creek and Gypsum Creek cut through the high plateaus of Demijohn Flat and Island Ridge. While primarily industrial and wild, the presence of the Tillett Ranch and the Red Water Well indicates the thin margin of ranching life that persisted in the lower elevations of these mountains. Multiple jeep trails provide the primary access through Demijohn Hollow and across the state line into Wyoming.
