Valles Caldera National Preserve dominates the northern landscape, encompassing the geothermal features of El Cajete and the expansive Valle Grande. The terrain is defined by volcanic geography, including the high elevation of Redondo Peak and the surrounding Jemez Mountains. To the south, the Santa Fe National Forest covers much of the land, where the E Fork Jemez River flows toward Jemez Falls.
