About this map

The small desert outpost of Rice sits at the intersection of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad and the Rice Road, serving as a critical infrastructure hub in the Mojave Desert. This 1983 provisional survey highlights the desert's industrial character, showing the engineered path of the Colorado River Aqueduct as it traverses the landscape with a series of siphons and dikes. A small Cem near the town center and an Air Field (Abandoned) to the south point to the area's mid-century activity, which had largely transitioned to maintenance and transit by the early 1980s.
