Richland serves as the focal point of this northern Montana landscape, situated near the intersection of Richland-Frazer Rd and the border between Valley and Daniels counties. This agricultural and ranching region is defined by an intricate network of drainage features, locally known as coulees, which channel water toward the W Fork Poplar River in the southeast. Notable landforms include the prominent Richland Hill and the long, winding Swift Coulee.
